Robert
Amoako's motivation for the setting up of the Ghana Book Trust
had a long personal history. As a young boy Robert attended
school in a deprived rural area where toys, books and other
educational materials were woefully in short supply: five children
had to share one book. There were certainly no supplementary
readers or study guides. Robert only had one exercise book which
he divided among the various subjects. The situation was the
same when he left for Teacher Training College to train as a
teacher. Robert began thinking about how to improve this situation.
Later, on entering University, Robert found the same situation.
Students had to copy and write the notes dictated by lecturers.
Photocopying was not a common phenomenon. Robert decided that
if he got the opportunity he would endeavor to change it. In
1990 the opportunity to work for CODE came, showing the way
to assist other students and my Ghana at large. Motivated by
the book famine in Africa, Robert set up a book donation centre
as a not for profit organization and continues to operate as
such. He contacted the Sabre Foundation, Books for Africa, International
Book Project, Book Aid International and other donors, who gave
GBT some books to begin.
